Born José Victoriano González-Pérez in Madrid, Juan Gris was a pioneering artist of the Cubist movement. He studied engineering and mechanical drawing before moving to Paris in 1906, where he became a central figure in the avant-garde circle alongside Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. He is best known for his lucidly composed still lifes and his contributions to Synthetic Cubism.
