Al Held was an influential American painter known for his evolution from Abstract Expressionism to hard-edged geometric abstraction and later, complex, large-scale works inspired by Renaissance perspective. He served in the U.S. Navy, studied at the Art Students League and in Paris, and taught at the Yale University School of Art for nearly two decades.
