Mary Ellen Bute was a pioneer American experimental filmmaker and producer known for her 'visual music' films. She studied painting at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and stage lighting at Yale University. Between 1934 and 1953, she created fourteen abstract musical films, often incorporating electronic imagery and oscilloscopes, and collaborated with figures such as Leon Theremin and Thomas Wilfred.
