Aloïse Corbaz was a Swiss outsider artist who worked as a governess in Germany before returning to Switzerland. In 1918, she was interned in a psychiatric institution for schizophrenia, where she remained for the rest of her life. During her long internment, she created a vast body of phantasmagoric drawings using colored pencils, graphite, and other materials, often depicting themes of love, opera, and royalty. She is considered a major figure of Art Brut.
