Born in Hangzhou, China, Shan Fan studied traditional Chinese painting before moving to Germany in 1984. He graduated from the HFBK Hamburg in 1987 and is known for his exploration of bamboo painting as a narrative of cultural synthesis between Eastern traditions and Western abstraction.
