DESCRIPTION

A significant figure in the postwar Japanese avant-garde, Sugimata transitioned from surrealism to abstract expressionism. He is well known for his 'Kikko' (tortoiseshell) series and served as a professor at Tama Art University and Tokyo University of the Arts.
