Born in Kamakura, Nankoku Hidai was the son of renowned calligrapher Tenrai Hidai. He moved beyond traditional calligraphy to develop a form of expression he termed 'spirit line,' often experimenting with non-traditional materials like oil paints and fiberboards to emphasize the calligraphic line.
