DESCRIPTION

Marthe Donas was a pioneering Belgian abstract and cubist painter and a significant figure in the international avant-garde movement of the interwar period. Born into a prosperous family in Antwerp, she overcame significant societal and familial opposition to pursue her artistic career, eventually studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and later in Paris. To navigate the male-dominated art world, she frequently used gender-neutral pseudonyms such as Tour Donas. Her work, which gained international recognition around 1920, was associated with the Section d'Or collective and figures like Alexander Archipenko. After a period of relative obscurity, her contributions to Modernism have been the subject of renewed scholarly and institutional interest.
