William Rush was a neoclassical sculptor from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, often cited as the first significant American sculptor. He began his career as an apprentice to a woodcarver and gained early fame for his ship figureheads before transitioning to public sculpture and helping to found the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
