Kim Whan-ki was a pioneering figure in the first generation of Korean abstract art. Born in Sinan County, South Korea, he studied in Japan and later lived in Paris and New York City. His work is characterized by a fusion of traditional Korean subject matter and lyrical sensibility with Western abstract styles, often featuring deep blue tones and dot patterns.
