Denzil Hurley was a post-conceptual painter who immigrated from Barbados to the United States. He earned his MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1979 and was known for his 'redact' series and 'sticks'—monochrome paintings attached to broom handles—which explored themes of history, language, and the African diaspora.
