Born Armand Pierre Fernandez in Nice, France, he was a prominent member of the Nouveau Réalisme movement. He is best known for his 'Accumulations'—sculptures composed of mass-produced objects stacked in containers. He moved to New York in 1973 and became a U.S. citizen, while retaining his French citizenship.
