Matthias Grünewald (born Mathis Gothardt) was a prominent German Renaissance painter known for his religious works characterized by intense color and visionary expressiveness. His most famous work is the Isenheim Altarpiece. He was also involved in engineering, specifically supervising town waterworks in Halle before his death in 1528.
