Rachel Ruysch was a renowned Dutch Golden Age painter who specialized in floral still-life compositions. Born in The Hague to a scientist father and an artistically inclined mother, she was apprenticed to Willem van Aelst at age 15. She achieved significant international fame during her lifetime for her refined technique, detailed rendering of flora and fauna, and innovative style, while also balancing a career with raising ten children.
