Born Maria Sol Escobar in Paris to Venezuelan parents, Marisol was an American sculptor known for her boxlike figurative works that combined wood, plaster, and other materials into complex tableaux. She rose to prominence in the 1960s, incorporating elements of Pop art, Surrealism, and folk art, and frequently used her own image in her work.
