Born in Fortaleza, Antonio Bandeira was a leading Brazilian painter of lyrical and informal abstractionism. He co-founded the Centro Cultural de Belas-Artes in 1941, studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and formed the Banbryols group with artists Camille Bryen and Wols.
