Alfredo Volpi was born in Lucca, Italy in 1896 and moved to São Paulo, Brazil as a young child. A largely self-taught artist who apprenticed in woodcarving and decorative painting, he became a prominent figure in Brazilian modern art, associated with Grupo Santa Helena and celebrated for his distinctive geometric compositions and iconic bandeirinhas (small flags) rendered in tempera.
