Matthias Groebel is a German artist born in Aachen and based in Cologne. Emerging as an autodidact in the early 1980s, Groebel developed a custom painting machine in the late 1980s that transferred captured television broadcasts and video footage directly onto canvas, investigating themes of media proliferation, surveillance, and cybernetics.
