William Merritt Chase was an American painter and influential art teacher known as an exponent of American Impressionism. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Royal Academy in Munich, and became renowned for his portraits, landscapes, studio interiors, and still lifes. Chase also established the Chase School of Art and directed the Shinnecock Hills Summer School of Art.
