Alma Woodsey Thomas was an American artist and educator associated with the Washington Color School. Known for her vibrant, mosaic-like abstract compositions composed of colorful rhythmic brushstrokes, in 1972 she became the first African American woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
