Painting, pastel, and collage
Arthur Garfield Dove (1880–1946) was a pioneering American modernist and is widely regarded as the first American artist to create purely abstract paintings. A core member of the circle surrounding photographer and gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, Dove developed a personal style of 'organic abstraction' based on his subjective experiences of nature, which he often described as 'extractions.' His work frequently explored natural rhythms, light, and sound using a diverse range of media, including oil, pastel, and experimental collages made from found objects.
