James Hampton was an American outsider artist who worked as a janitor for the General Services Administration in Washington, D.C. He is best known for 'The Throne of the Third Heaven of the Nations' Millennium General Assembly,' a monumental religious sculpture he spent fourteen years building in a rented garage. Using discarded materials such as aluminum foil, cardboard, and light bulbs, Hampton created a complex visionary work that was only discovered after his death in 1964.
