Alma Woodsey Thomas was a pioneer of African American abstraction and a key figure in the Washington Color School. After a 35-year career as a public school teacher, she achieved major artistic success in her 80s, becoming the first Black woman to have a solo exhibition at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1972.
