Mannerist Painting
Lavinia Fontana was a Bolognese Mannerist painter regarded as the first female professional artist in Western Europe to work in the same public sphere as her male counterparts. She was a prolific portraitist and became the first woman to be commissioned for a public altarpiece, supporting her family of eleven children through her artistic career.
