Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins was an American realist painter, photographer, sculptor, and fine arts educator. He spent most of his life in Philadelphia, where he became known for his portraits and genre scenes, emphasizing anatomical accuracy and psychological depth. His masterpiece, The Gross Clinic, was controversial for its frank portrayal of surgery.
