Born in Santiago, Chile, Joan Belmar lived in Spain before moving to Washington, D.C. in 1999. He was granted permanent residency in the U.S. based on extraordinary artistic merit and became a citizen in 2010. Belmar is best known for a unique three-dimensional painting technique that utilizes painted Mylar and acetate strips to create translucent, light-responsive abstract compositions.
