Painting

DESCRIPTION

Born in Cape Town and based in Amsterdam since 1976, Marlene Dumas is one of the most influential figurative painters of her generation. Her work primarily focuses on the human figure and explores psychologically charged themes such as race, sexuality, guilt, and identity. Drawing from a vast archive of personal and mass-media imagery, her thin-washed oil paintings often blur the line between individual portraiture and collective experience. She represented the Netherlands at the Venice Biennale in 1995.
