Robert Motherwell was an American painter, printmaker, and scholar who was one of the youngest members of the New York School. Known for his intellectual approach to Abstract Expressionism, he is most famous for his "Elegy to the Spanish Republic" series. He founded the Dedalus Foundation to promote the understanding of modern art.
