Willem de Kooning was a Dutch-American artist who emerged as a leading figure of the Abstract Expressionist movement. Born in Rotterdam, he immigrated to the United States as a stowaway in 1926. He is best known for his "Woman" series, which blended figuration with aggressive, gestural abstraction, and his mastery of dynamic brushwork within the New York School.
