Nitza Tufiño is a visual artist, muralist, and community activist born in 1949 in Mexico City. The daughter of the renowned Puerto Rican artist Rafael Tufiño, she was raised in Puerto Rico before studying at the Academia de San Carlos in Mexico. Tufiño is a founding member of El Museo del Barrio and was the first female artist to join the Taller Boricua collective in New York City. She is widely recognized for her public art projects, including landmark ceramic murals for the New York City subway system. Her work frequently explores themes of identity, cultural heritage, and community empowerment.
