Amiri Baraka, born Everett LeRoi Jones, was a foundational figure in the Black Arts Movement and a influential voice in 20th-century American literature. His career spanned from the Beat movement of Greenwich Village to radical Black Nationalism and Marxism. He is best known for the Obie Award-winning play "Dutchman" and his seminal work of music history, "Blues People: Negro Music in White America."
