DESCRIPTION

Gloria Klein (1936–2021) was an abstract painter based in New York City and a key figure in the Pattern and Decoration movement. Born in Brooklyn, she was a founding member of the Criss-Cross artist cooperative and was deeply involved in alternative art networks during the 1970s. Her work is characterized by meticulous, grid-based compositions featuring thousands of hand-painted diagonal hatch marks that explore mathematical systems and the tension between order and chaos. An advocate for women and lesbian artists, she participated in the historic 1978 exhibition "A Lesbian Show" and contributed to the feminist publication Heresies. Her work is held in collections such as the Blanton Museum of Art.
