Barbara Chase-Riboud is an acclaimed American sculptor, novelist, and poet who has lived and worked in Paris since 1961. Born in Philadelphia, she was the first Black woman to receive an MFA from Yale University (1960). She is best known for her 'Malcolm X Steles,' a series of monumental bronze sculptures that innovatively integrate silk and wool elements. Beyond her visual art, she achieved international literary fame for her historical novel 'Sally Hemings' (1979). Her work frequently explores themes of transnational history, memory, and the juxtaposition of hard and soft materials.
