Edward Mitchell Bannister was a Tonalist painter and the first African American to win a national award for his art, receiving a bronze medal at the 1876 Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Born in Canada and later settling in Rhode Island, he was a founding member of the Providence Art Club.
