DESCRIPTION

Johanna Calle is a contemporary artist born in Bogotá, Colombia, who is widely recognized for her conceptual and expanded approach to drawing. She earned her BA from the Universidad de los Andes in Bogotá and an MFA from the Chelsea College of Art and Design in London. Calle's practice involves the use of unconventional materials—such as wire, thread, typewritten text, and found archival ledgers—to create intricate works that address sensitive social, political, and environmental issues in Colombia. Her art frequently explores themes of violence, land rights, urbanization, and gender. Calle has exhibited her work in major international biennials and institutions, and her pieces are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Tate Modern (London), and the Art Institute of Chicago.
