Xu Bing is a pioneering Chinese contemporary artist known for his installations and mixed-media works that explore and subvert systems of language. His most famous works include 'Book from the Sky', a monumental installation of illegible characters, and 'Square Word Calligraphy', a writing system that renders English into the visual structure of Chinese. He was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship in 1999 and served as Vice-President of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing.
