Daniel Buren is a prominent French conceptual artist known for his 'in situ' installations and the consistent use of 8.7 cm wide vertical stripes. His work challenges the traditional frameworks of art institutions, and he was awarded the Golden Lion for best pavilion at the 1986 Venice Biennale.
