Young-Il Ahn was a Korean-American painter celebrated for his luminous abstractions. Born in Korea and identified as a child prodigy, he immigrated to Los Angeles in 1966. He is best known for his "Water" series, a multi-decade project inspired by a transformative 1983 experience of being lost at sea in dense fog. He was the first Korean-American artist to receive a solo exhibition at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
