Emilio Cruz was an Afro-Cuban American artist and writer who merged Abstract Expressionism with figurative imagery. His work frequently explored mythic archetypes, ancestry, and natural history. Cruz was a significant figure in both the New York and Chicago art scenes, teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the Pratt Institute. His legacy includes paintings, sculptures, and several plays.
