DESCRIPTION

Born in Shizuoka, Japan, Akiko Hirai moved to London in 1999 to study ceramics at the University of Westminster and Central Saint Martins. Her work, which includes functional tableware and large-scale sculptural 'moon jars,' is defined by highly textured surfaces and a blend of Japanese tradition and British studio pottery influences. She was shortlisted for the Loewe Craft Prize in 2019.
