Sylvia Sleigh was a realist painter and a leading figure in the feminist art movement. She moved to New York in 1961 with her husband, the art critic Lawrence Alloway. Sleigh is celebrated for reversing the traditional 'male gaze' by painting nude men in poses historically reserved for female subjects, such as in her famous work 'The Turkish Bath.' Her portraits are noted for their high level of detail, capturing specific physical characteristics and the individual dignity of her subjects.
