Painting and Printmaking
Carlos Schwabe was a Swiss Symbolist painter and printmaker born in Germany and raised in Geneva. He is best known for his mystical and allegorical illustrations of literary works, such as Zola's 'Le Rêve' and Baudelaire's 'Les Fleurs du Mal.' Schwabe was a key figure in the Parisian Symbolist circle and designed the iconic poster for the first Salon de la Rose + Croix in 1892. His art often explored themes of death, spiritual idealism, and the interplay between the physical and ethereal realms.
