Jean-Étienne Liotard was a Swiss painter and art connoisseur known for his mastery of pastel portraits. A citizen of the Republic of Geneva, he traveled extensively throughout Europe and the Ottoman Empire. His four-year stay in Constantinople significantly influenced his style, leading him to adopt Turkish dress and a long beard, which earned him the nickname 'the Turkish painter.' His work is characterized by a strikingly naturalistic approach and meticulous attention to detail, often following his theory that painting should be a 'mirror of nature.'
