A self-taught artist and a founding member of the avant-garde "Stars Group" (Xing Xing) in 1979, Ma Desheng is a seminal figure in contemporary Chinese art. After moving to Paris in the 1980s, he shifted from woodblock prints to monumental paintings and sculptures of stone motifs. Despite a car accident that left him paralyzed, he continues to create highly expressive works rooted in Taoist philosophy.
