Chiura Obata was an influential artist and educator known for his synthesis of Japanese sumi-e ink wash painting and Modernist watercolor techniques. He is most famous for his depictions of the California landscape, particularly Yosemite National Park, and for his leadership in founding an art school while incarcerated in Japanese internment camps during World War II.
