Richard Gerstl was an Austrian painter and draughtsman known for his expressive, psychologically insightful portraits and landscapes. A pioneer of Austrian Expressionism, his career was tragically short; he committed suicide at age 25 following a scandalous affair with Mathilde Schoenberg, the wife of composer Arnold Schoenberg. His work remained largely unknown to the public until it was rediscovered in the early 1930s.
