Friedrich von Amerling was a leading Austro-Hungarian portrait painter who served the court of Emperor Franz Joseph I from 1835 to 1880. Influenced by Sir Thomas Lawrence, he became one of the most sought-after portraitists of the Biedermeier era, creating over a thousand works that combined clarity of outline with a sensitive, refined style for the aristocracy and upper middle class.
