Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller was one of the most influential Austrian painters of the 19th-century Biedermeier period. He was a pioneer of realism, emphasizing the importance of light and the direct study of nature in his landscapes, genre scenes, and portraits. His progressive views on art education and criticism of traditional academic methods led to significant professional conflicts with the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts.
