Born in Harare, Zimbabwe, and based in Amsterdam and New York City, James Beckett has a research-based practice that investigates minor histories, industrial development, and the evolution of European industry. He often employs museological display mechanisms to present his findings and was awarded the Dutch Prix de Rome for Art in Public Space in 2003.
