Simon Hantaï was a Hungarian-born French painter celebrated for his contributions to abstraction. In 1960, he developed his signature 'pliage' (folding) technique, where he folded or knotted canvas before applying paint to produce intricate patterns of color and negative space upon unfolding. He represented France at the 1982 Venice Biennale before withdrawing from the public art world for many years.
